Project Description

With more than 97,000 students attending 150 schools, this Kentucky school district located in the city of Louisville is the 28th largest in the United States. The 90 elementary schools in the district represent an extremely diverse student population, and Reading Recovery has played a key role in meeting the needs of many of these children for over 20 years. The first Reading Recovery site in Kentucky was established in Louisville in 1988–1989 when two primary teachers, Judy Embry and Joyce Cecil, were selected for teacher leader training at The Ohio State University. Twenty-six years later, Reading Recovery maintains a strong presence in the district elementary schools, with 71 Reading Recovery teachers serving students in 47 district elementary schools. The district also supports 3 Reading Recovery training sites, 3 trained teacher leaders, and 3 teacher leaders currently in their field year.
