Project Description

York Region District School Board is the third largest district in Ontario with over 123 000 students in 174 elementary schools and 36 secondary schools. Reading Recovery is in its 21st year of implementation and has Reading Recovery teachers in all of its English-speaking elementary schools.  There are currently over 200 active Reading Recovery teachers in our district, with many previously trained teachers back in classrooms and in administrative or leadership roles. Each year, approximately 30 to 40 new teachers are trained in Reading Recovery ensuring that there are many Reading Recovery teachers within each school to help build capacity in literacy instruction. Reading Recovery is considered to be a key system strategy in reaching the district’s goals and is an integral part of the Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement.  Reading Recovery in York Region has consistently achieved strong student outcomes.
