Project Description
Reading Recovery is a critical component of the balanced literacy program that is used in the six elementary schools in Sheridan County School District. Reading Recovery teachers are seen as expert reading teachers and work closely with classroom teachers to ensure that all students learn to read. They are also used as a resource for all children who struggle with early literacy. Several special education teachers have also been trained in Reading Recovery. As superintendent for the district, Craig Dougherty continues to support Reading Recovery in Sheridan. Wyoming teachers from Lovell along with teachers from Billings, MT and Pretty Eagle Academy on the Crow Indian reservation are supported by the Sheridan site. Reading Recovery began in Sheridan during the 1996-97 school year, and over 2,500 children have had Reading Recovery lessons through the Sheridan training site.
