Project Description

Last year I retired after a long career in education. There were so many joys to point to during my tenure but none more so than the time I spent working within the Reading Recovery network! As a site coordinator for more than 20 years in Fort Bend ISD I was privileged to work with great teacher leaders to support one of the largest implementations of Reading Recovery/Descubriendo la Lectura in the U.S. During that time I witnessed over and over again the power of this intervention in changing the lives of both students and teachers! Students soared in their reading and writing skills! Teachers excelled in their skills in literacy instruction! It was so rewarding to walk into schools where effective literacy practices were gaining strength every year under the positive influence of Reading Recovery and Descubriendo la Lectura. This intervention became a key piece of comprehensive literacy plans on campuses, and assessment results in reading reflected the positives of such coordinated efforts for all children. In particular, it was wonderful to observe achievement gaps being closed for so many students with challenges in their literacy learning!

Reading Recovery and Descubriendo la Lectura brought such excellence to our district! It is awesome to think of the extent of its influence over 30 years across North America! A celebration indeed!
