Project Description

Jill Speering was trained as a Reading Recovery teacher leader at The Ohio State University by Mary Fried, Rosemary Estes, Diane DeFord, Gay Su Pinnell, and Carol Lyons in 1994-95.  From 1995-2010, Jill trained Reading Recovery teachers in Metro Nashville Public Schools. During that 15-year span, Nashville experienced change in leadership resulting in four different superintendents. In order to have a voice in leadership, Jill retired from Metro Schools and was elected to a seat on the Nashville School Board in 2012. In May 2014, Jill was part of the board’s unanimous decision to bring Dr. Shawn Joseph to Nashville from Prince George’s County, MD. Because Jill wanted to work with Dr. Joseph to further the expansion of Reading Recovery, Jill ran for another term on the school board and was elected in August 2016. Jill was sworn in for a 4-year term on Sept. 6, 2016, and was elected vice chair of the school board on September 13.  We congratulate our Reading Recovery advocate, previous teacher leader, and long-time supporter of literacy who will serve on the Metro Nashville School Board through 2020.
