Photo and Artwork Requirements

Digital files

Digital files are preferred. Identifiers for all persons in the photo must be supplied prior to publication. If more than one digital file is sent, please be specific as to identifiers for each image.

While digital files greatly improve the production flow for both contributor and publisher, there are certain guidelines to consider when shooting and submitting digital image files for print publication.

We will need a high resolution file (300dpi) for printing. Most digital cameras allow multiple settings for image quality and size. Generally, you want to use the setting that allows the fewest photos to be stored on the memory card.

For example:
Low quality — 600 x 400 resolution
Good quality — 1024 x 768 resolution
Better quality — 1280 x 1024 resolution
Best quality — 1600 x 1200 resolution

The 1600 x 1200 resolution setting is preferred; 1280 x 1024 is acceptable. Both will generate a large digital image, which you can simply attach to an email and send to us.

35mm prints

We prefer to receive digital photos, but we will accept prints for scanning. In either case, please be sure the focus is crisp and the subject can easily be isolated (if cropping is necessary to remove other people or objects from the photo).

Only prints of the highest quality should be submitted, complete with identifiers for all persons in the photo. Please do not press heavily when writing on the back of the photo, as indentations often cause problems in the scanning process. Also please use caution with felt tip pens as the ink tends to smear and may cause problems with the image. Ideally, the identifiers should be on a separate piece of paper and attached to the bottom or back of the photo.

Original artwork and writing samples

If you are scanning the documents, we need a minimum resolution of 300dpi at actual size. If you can not produce a clean, crisp, high resolution scan, please send us the originals.

Prints and original items should be mailed to:

Vicki Fox, communications manager
Reading Recovery Council of North America
500 W. Wilson Bridge Road, Suite 250
Worthington, OH 43085

Note: Photos and artwork/writing samples will not be returned unless requested at submission. Iitems requested for return will not be sent until after the issue has been printed and distributed.
