Jeffery WilliamsJeffery L. Williams is K-12 district literacy resource teacher leader and a Reading Recovery teacher at Solon (Ohio) City Schools. Jeff was a classroom teacher for 10 years before becoming a Reading Recovery teacher and literacy coach. He presents at numerous national conferences, is a national consultant, and has written several articles for literacy publications.

Learning to Read is Not a Race: Exploring Teaching Opportunities within Chapter Books for Transitional Readers

Explore how to help readers gain insight into the complexity of how chapter books work. Examine the kinds of teaching and thinking that are required to support readers as they transition into longer texts. Though emphasis is placed on transitional readers, most concepts apply to Grades 1-6. Includes downloadable handouts.

Learn to:

  • develop an understanding of the needs of transitional readers
  • gain knowledge about the complexities of chapter books
  • plan more explicit instruction to address the strategies and understandings that transitional readers need

Important Purchasing and Viewing Information

After you purchase the webcast at the RRCNA Store, an instruction page will open on your screen. It will contain links to any downloadable handouts, important playback instructions, and a link to begin the webcast. (If you order by fax or mail, these will be sent to you when your transaction is completed.)

A broadband Internet connection such as DSL, cable, or a T1 is required. Dialup connections will not support streaming video. If you are using an outdated browser, you will be alerted to upgrade to a version supported by the video software. Due to the size of the viewing window, this presentation is best viewed by an individual or a small group. The window can be expanded to full screen, but the video quality will be greatly reduced. Older browsers also will not support full-screen viewing.

If the webcast will be presented for training purposes, you should test it first by playing the entire video to make sure it runs properly on the computer you will be using for the presentation. Close and quit all programs and any background applications (screensaver, sleep mode, auto update, etc.) prior to viewing the webcast. Please communicate with your IT department to confirm that you do not have any firewalls in place that might block streaming media.

To begin the webcast, click on the play arrow. The webcast will play either as an Adobe Flash video or HTML5 video. You may be alerted to upgrade your video playback software. You can pause at anytime while the video is playing, then click on the play arrow again to continue. However, if you close the webpage while playing, you will have to start from the beginning the next time you view the video.
